  • Q1) When are the elections ?
    Saturday 23rd of November 2019 between 10:00AM and 04:00PM

Q2) Where are the elections ?
In the ladies section at Canterbury Mosque, The Markaz, 1 Giles Ln, Canterbury, CT2 7LT.

Q3) Why are we holding the elections ?
According to the constitution, the CMCC has to organise elections every year. In these elections, the voters will elect a new executive committee (6 positions).

Q4) Are these elections organised to fill a gap in the positions ?
No, these elections were organised to produce a full new body (Executive Committee, Trustees) to manage and run the CMCC, that means all positions are up for elections.

Q5) Who can vote on the day of elections ?
Only registered members can vote on the day of the elections.

Q6) Is the Board of Trustees elected or appointed ?
According to the constitution, when a new executive committee is elected, the members of the the exectuive committee can vote to appoint 3 to 5 trustees on the Board of Trustees.

Q7) So, why are there elections for the board of trustees ?
The elections for the Board of Trustees are advisory so the executive committee would have an insight into the community choices.

Q8) How many nominees do we have for each position ?
There is only one nominee for each position.

Q9) Why are we holding the elections even that the nominee are unopposed ?
According to the CMCC constitutions "The executive committee shall be elected from amongst the council (Community members)". According the general guidance from the charity commission "Usually a show of hands is enough to tell the result of a vote, but a poll can be used if not. So, unopposed nominee doesn't convert him/her into an exectuive committee member automatically. The members have the last say either to approve this nomination or not.

Q10) Why are we having a polling not a "show of hands" voting?
Due to members ( council) personal and professional commitments. The idea of giving more time frame is to encourage participation and getting community to be involved.

Q11) What is going to happen on the day of the election ?
The persons who submitted their membership applications and conditionally approved should bring a photo ID and a proof of address to Cantrbury mosque at anytime between 10:00AM and 04:00PM on Saturday 23rd of November. The elections committee members will check their documents and if all the information is correct, the person will get a ballot paper and a pen. The voter can put the ballot paper in a closed box when s/he finished filling it.

Q12) What are the choices in the ballot paper ?
There will be the position and the nominee name next to it. The voter must tick the box next to the nominee name ONLY if the voter approves the nominee. Not ticking the box means that the voter doesn not approve the nominee for that position.

Q13) When does the nominee become elected member ?
A nominee will be an elected member ONLY if more than 50% of the voters approved her/his nomination (by ticking the box next to her/his name).

Q14) What if a nominee failed to win simple majoirty of the votes?
This position will be open to re-election.

Q15) What if the result is a tie for certain position ?
This position will be open to re-election.

  • Announcement

On the 9th of October 2019, the Election Committee received a copy of the original Constitution of CMCC (submitted to the Charity Commission on the 06th April 1997) from Brother Ramazan (Acting Chairman). After adequate verification of the document, It is our duty to uphold the current constitution to the best of our ability, in a practical and rational way. We are pleased to announce a brief plan for the election process.Ideally, constitution of charities and organisations should develop, adapt and should strive to be constitutionally compliant at all times, however this has not been the case for CMCC. It is important to understand and recognise these are challenging and difficult times, and we really appreciate your patience and understanding. After seeking advice from several independent sources including the 'Muslim Council of Britain', we have reached a practical and logical solution to hold independent, transparent and fair elections.

    Membership

The constitution states in Section B Article 4 (ii)In order for a person to be entitled to vote, she/he should be a registered member of the CMCC”. To date, there has been no mechanism put in place for an up-to-date process to maintain a register for the community members. In line with present day legislation, any personal data collected and stored, should be subject to GDPR regulations. The Election committee has requested the Trustees to approve and adopt GDPR policy to ensure that registration process is reviewed, updated and is GDPR compliant with UK Legislation.

Submission of Registration applications will be made available online:

Between Friday 25th of October 2019 and Tuesday 19th of November 2019 11:59pm.

    The Executive Committee

Section C Article 7 (iv) states: There should be six members in the Executive Committee. President, General Secretary, Treasurer and The Assistant Treasurer: These 4 members should be residents of Canterbury or its surroundings. There are two other positions: Vice-President and Assistant General Secretary.

Submission of Nomination applications will be made available online:

Between Friday 25th of October 2019 and Friday 15th of November 2019 11:59pm

    Board of Trustees (Advisory Elections)

There is a clear conflict in Constitution of 1997 regarding the election for the Trustees. The election committee proposes to hold an Advisory Election of the Trustees on the same day, in order to facilitate, guide and suggest a possible course of action to the new Executive Committee.

Once the Trustees have been elected by the public, It is entirely within the newly elected Executive Committee's discretion to take into account the results of the Trustee advisory election. Please be aware that the Executive Committee might or might not want to take into account the results of the advisory election.

Submission of Nomination applications will be made available online:

Between Friday 25th of October 2019 and Friday 15th of November 2019 11:59pm

    Election Officer (Election committee)
